Does Earthscale run on my device or in the cloud?

Entirely on your device. Inference runs on llama.cpp, compiled into the app and accelerated by the Metal GPU. Earthscale does not operate cloud AI infrastructure, and your conversations are not sent to Earthscale or any third party to generate a response.

Are my conversations private?

Yes. Conversations, memory and attached photos are stored on your device and never uploaded. The inference engine has no networking code at all, so there is no path from “send” to a server. The only network traffic Earthscale generates is downloading a model you chose and processing your App Store subscription.

Which AI models does Earthscale use?

Open-weight models published by their original creators, such as Qwen and ggml-org, each distributed under its own license. Earthscale never fine-tunes or modifies them. There are six tiers: Nano, Lite, Edge, Core, Prime and Max, from 256 million to 12 billion parameters.

Once a model is downloaded, everyday chat runs on-device without needing a remote AI service. You need a connection to download a model and to process a subscription. Some connected features require the internet, and Earthscale makes those boundaries explicit.

How much storage and memory do the models need?

It depends on the tier. Nano is a 175 MB download and needs about 500 MB of memory. Core is a 986 MB download and needs about 2.4 GB. Max is a 7.3 GB download and needs about 9.8 GB. On lower-memory devices a tier can automatically use a lighter quantization of the same model.

Yes. Attach a photo and a local vision-language model reads it on your device. The photo is never uploaded.

What is Reasoning Mode?

A real six-stage pipeline (analyze, plan, solve, critique, revise, finalize) where each stage is a separate generation pass over the same local model. Depth adapts to how hard the prompt is, and the heaviest tier can use up to nine passes.
